Which way do I go? Dec. 3rd, 2004 @ 11:06 pm
It looks like someone's finally starting to take notice of talents I don't possess. My mom went to pick up some kind of package for me at the post office today, and she came back with a large envelope filled not-quite-to-the-brim with information on Phillips Academy. For the uninitiated and the people who are too lazy to use either Google or Wikipedia, Phillips Academy is one of those really private, really expensive, really GOOD schools that 'prepares America's elite' for prestigious (usually Ivy League and Yale, in particular) universities / colleges / institutions / whatever the hell you want to call them.

Of course, this poses a problem for me. Do I want to give up the connections I've made at my current school up to this point? Do I want to turn my back on my friends there? my friends here? What do I lose? What do I gain? Better chances of being something, of being someone? Is it worth it? Is this the price of success?

Is this a crossroads, or just something to push me further down that road to insanity?

Well...it's been a rather interesting Thanksgiving.
I woke up at 10AM this morning, spent two hours playing Half-Life: Source, Half-Life 2, and Counter-Strike: Source (and sucking at all three). Then I did absolutely nothing for an hour until my mom dragged me over to Chinatown to eat dim sum. I stuffed my face and headed on down to Fenway House, where I...did nothing for a while, then watched some Trigun for two hours while I waited for the Fenbeings to prepare their Thanksgiving dinner.

So I help set the table, and everything is just about ready...except the turkey. Yeah. According to the Fenbeings' knowledge of their stove, the temperature on their stove could only reach 250F (or was that 290F?) instead of the requisite 350F that was required to cook it in the time we had available to us. We gritted our teeth and waited patiently for the turkey to cook over the extra time. After a while, Skuld declared it just about ready...and when Ken took the thermometer reading, the temperature was actually 350F! End result: slightly overcooked turkey which was somewhat difficult to eat. (Whacking it with a knife produced a dull *CLUNK* sound.) In any case, I had a relatively good time there (especially during the 25-minute free roam period I had in between the time when I finished my non-turkey meal and the completion of the turkey, in which I mooched a WHOLE LOT of lotion out of Skuld's closet).

We also managed to play Star Wars LIFE with five people. I finished the game as a Sith Lord...then promptly got axed by Skuld, who absolutely dominated me in every single skill category. The only consolation I had was knowing that Skuld also axed the strongest Jedi Master, making her uncontested ruler of the world (well, what was left of it, anyway).

At that point, I got evicted from Fenway House. So, here I am, writing this LJ entry.
That is all.

How long has it been? Two months?
Well, it's pretty much been hosage and indifference, so I haven't had a whole lot of opportune times to update this thing. Not that anything interesting really happens with any regularity to me, anyway.
In school news, I picked up my first Approbation with Distinction (all grades A- or higher, for the uninitiated).
In DDR news, I haven't been very active.
In other news, I need to get a life.
That is all.

I am so sick right now.
I haven't played DDR in four days, and I'm still losing more weight than I would be if I were still playing every day.
Maybe when I go back to the arcade on Saturday, the exercise will help me recuperate.

School is...well, school, but I appear to be getting the year off to a good start, aside from the fact that I forgot to hand in the first homework assignment for the year in History, and totally bombed the first Physics quiz. Latin Prose Honors isn't as bad as I made it out to be, Geometry is surprisingly easy for now, and everything else is just a cakewalk, Chinese being the only notable exception.

Chinese class is fucking hilarious. Because the normal teacher has fallen ill with some mystery ailment that no one seems to know about, Chinese 2, Chinese 3, and Chinese 5 Honors have all been assigned a 'temporary' teacher. The problem is that she treats the Chinese 2 and Chinese 3 classes as if they were in the previous year, i.e., she treats the Chinese 2 like a Chinese 1 and the Chinese 3 like a Chinese 2. This results in a whole lot of discontent among all the Chinese students, especially those of us who are actually capable of transferring to a higher class but do not wish to. (Read: Me and a handful of other people.) At any given moment during the class, I will probably either be A) Sleeping, B) Insulting the competency of the teacher behind her back, C) Not following the class at all, or D) Some other random antic that I just feel like performing.

Well, I guess it's back to the bed for me. I can already feel the medicine start to kick in...

Leave a comment with your name if you want to know what I really think of you, and I’ll reply and tell you. No lies, all honesty. If you want, put it in your journal so that I can see the complementary thoughts.

I'm screening my replies if they end up being really long and somewhat personal, although I find this situation very unlikely. You might have a problem replying back to a screened comment, so just reply to your original comment.

Let the games begin!

Well, because I thought that my soundtrack was somewhat nondiversified, I figured I should spruce it up a bit. And here we are. The song choices haven't been changed too much, but some songs have been replaced, moved around for better effect, and I've (thankfully) disbanded the monopoly held by Kana ~Imouto~.

It's still filth, but it's better filth this time. )

Geez, it's been a while, hasn't it.
Does anyone even read this thing anymore?

In any case, HSSP is over, thus marking the end of the long, pseudo-poetic entries filled with nothing other than what I did during the day, which was, in retrospect, very uninteresting.

In a way, I'm almost looking forward to returning to school...one can only play Counter-Strike: Source and various hentai games for so long before the mind becomes bored. The only thing that's keeping me from flat out whining about not being able to return to school early is the summer reading. I hate summer reading. I hate work in general, but at least I know that I have Really, do they think that we are too dim to understand literature? Are the book assessments that we are forced to do during the actual school year not enough? What good does redundant reading do?

The other reason why I'm looking forward to the school year is because I will get to see some familiar faces, both inside school and out. (Read: I don't care about my classmates, but I want the MIT people to come back, because it's boring as hell at the game room without them.)

But, in the meantime, while I wait for the 2.2 weeks to pass, I'll just satiate myself with more and more games. And I'm going to continue on my doomed quest to learn Japanese. GG kanji.

Yesterday was...
I'd say it was 'unusual', but because every Saturday is, in some way, unusual for me, I'll just say it was 'normal'.

Having eaten excessive amounts of watermelon the night before, I woke up at 6:00 with a strong urge to use the facilities. After relieving myself and going back to sleep, I woke up at 9:00 with another strong urge to use the facilities. After relieving myself again, I decided that 9:00 would not be a bad time to start the day, considering the impending classes at 10:00.

I poured out some cereal for myself, then looked at the expiration date on the carton of milk that was in the refrigerator. August 6th. "Damn." Of course, losing a bit of milk to expiration isn't too much of a loss. Losing that bit of milk after you have already poured your cereal out is...somewhat more irritating. And then there's the fact that I didn't just lose a 'little bit' of milk; I lost the whole damn carton! Yes, that's right, a freshly opened carton of milk just went down the drain. Very irate at my misfortune, I sat down on the couch and grazed on my dry cereal much like a cow would graze on its grass. Of course, my mom, with her wily Chinese ways, decided that since the milk had only been expired one day, heating it up would fix whatever stench and rot it had accumulated. She was right; however, you don't really eat cold cereal with hot milk. However, with no other alternative, I reluctantly poured out some of the sickeningly warm milk onto my cereal, and barely managed to stomach the mix.

Arriving to classes 5 minutes late (which was still an improvement over the 20 minute tardinesses I had accumulated in the prior weeks), C-02, once again, failed to hold my interest for the entire two hours of class. I was snoozing fast with 25 minutes remaining, and remained such until classes were dismissed, at which point I conveniently snapped out of my slumber and walked out the door, slightly disconcerted from such a sudden awakening.

I had intended to buy some lunch to eat for the coincidentally-named lunch break, but as soon as I walked into the game room, the people playing DDR almost literally shoved me onto the pad. At 12:47PM, with sweat trailing down my face, I abandoned all hope of getting lunch, and instead set out for my next class. I was, therefore, understandably shocked when, having walked all the way down the corridor to 1-132 to report for M-16, I found no one inside. Puzzled, I walked up and down the 1- corridor, trying to think of some reason why M-16 was not meeting that day. Then the words of the teacher from last week flashed back into my memory. "Well, Louis, since you're joining our class late, you should know that we're not meeting next week." Cursing myself for my inability to remember important bits of information at opportune times, I trekked back to building 7, thinking about where to go next. Reluctantly, I decided to return to my assigned class, M-17. I trekked all the way down the Infinite Corridor to 4-149, when I realized that I didn't really want to listen to a lecture that I wouldn't understand at all. With no other place to go to, I wandered around campus for a while, finally stumbling upon building 14, the Hayden Library. After looking through several books on Differential Equations and Non-Euclidean Geometry, the contents of which I did not understand at all, I found a book on "Dark Matter" and read for the remainder of my 'free' period.

At 2:53, I returned my book to its shelf and set out for S-26. I had intended to waltz into class fashionably late, using the excuse of "getting lost in Building 14"; however, I soon found out, much to my ego's dismay, that Building 14 was very close to 4-370, the site of S-26. I had intended to arrive at about 3:03. I arrived at 2:55, a mere two minutes after leaving the Hayden Library. S-26 itself was rather unusual, even for S-26, as we learned how to act and direct. I also learned that I'm not such a great actor, after neglecting to do anything in the "Bank Robbery" scene other than throwing a chalk-stick grenade as soon as all hell broke loose. After being dismissed, I retreated, as always, to W20.

I didn't get too much done in DDR. I think I'm slowing down, but at this point, it's almost impossible not to slow down. I did play some random versus ONIs with Joe, though, all of which I won (albeit only barely on World Tour; damn 12-minute course). I also returned his Family Guy to him, leaving me without any Family Guy whatsoever myself.

Is next Saturday really no-tax day? There's not really too much for me to buy, but if whatever I do buy doesn't get that annoying 5% tax tacked onto it...I may just consider getting something useful for my computer. God knows I could do with some more RAM or a bigger video card for DOOM3. The more realistic it is, the better.

Well, whatever.

Apparently, I'm now in an undeclared vendetta with Kiba.

According to Billy Brown, Kiba arrived at the Otakon Game Room on Friday, stormed to the DDR setup, and exclaimed that both Reflexx ( {SFSA} Flex} ) and Louis Gao (ZZZ, or, rather, ME) 'owed' him matches.

Of course, I didn't actually go to Otakon, nor did I ever have any intention of going to Otakon, because it was too much hassle for something not so interesting for me. Now, this leaves one loose end: How did Kiba conclude that I was going to Otakon, if I had not told anyone that I was going, or, for that matter, that I was not going?

Since I have an irrational amount of time to piss away, I'll try and come up with several possible explanations.

1. Well, Kiba never really was one to take any kind of liking to me, ever since I came up with proof for my MAX 300 AAA...we can infer, therefore, that after he saw what I looked like from my various Legend Road pictures, he decided that because I was Asian, wore glasses, and was good at DDR, then I would naturally be a huge anime fan. Thus, even though I told no one about my [non-existent] Otakon plans, he drew his own conclusions, and decided that I would be going, based only on my appearance and a pre-defined stereotype.

2. If Kiba reads smells.like.fangirl at all, then he would have seen Skuld's toast to all of her friends who were going to Otakon. In her toast, she addresses "Joel and the Bemani group." I happen to be listed as one of the members of the "Bemani Folk." However, she never specifies which of the Bemani group she means, so if Kiba did read that, then he would probably have assumed that she was talking about all the Bemani Folk, including me. Thus, he goes to Otakon, expecting to see me there.

3. Combine 1 and 2. This means, of course, that he's stalking my every move in some attempt to get the jump on me.

4. Of course, he could always have just stormed in there and demanded a match from us in an attempt to win popularity of the crowd, which, considering the sheer size of that crowd, wouldn't be a completely outrageous idea.

If you have any other leads, do post them here.

My summer life always seems to fail at being interesting, but as long as it's something to do...
Anyway, I got up at 9:30 yesterday. My thoughts were in complete disarray from having slept only six hours ago, so I went back to sleep, and woke up at 9:45. Although my head felt considerably better after the extended nap, my head was ringing from my mom yelling at me to get up and get in the car, to go to classes. I wasn't able to procure any foodstuffs for my morning meal, so all I had was a large cup of orange juice (which I could not bring myself to finish), and I was off.

Okay, so I really am susceptible to hunger, despite what my semi-large frame suggests. I was completely incapable of concentrating through C-02, and my thoughts continually turned toward the noon break, DDR, X-Change 2 (complete with the unpleasant changes in the crotch caused by thinking of something like that...), and S-26. I was literally counting down the minutes to 12:00noon, and as soon as we were able to leave, I ambled out of the room, devastated by my hunger.

After satiating my hunger to the extent where I was able to concentrate in fragments, I settled down in the Student Center, waiting for the next classes to start. However, the endless stream of inferior DDR players evoked my DDR spirit, if you will. I immediately changed into my 'power shoes', slapped two tokens on the machine, and waited somewhat impatiently for my turn. As soon as I got up onto the familiar metal stage, I blew everyone away with my 2 greats on So Deep and my ability to get the One More ExtraStage in addition to the ExtraStage. Unfortunately, the resulting outpour of sweat forced me to sidestep 20 minutes of M-16, in order that I might not walk into class looking like a complete madman.

I understood very little of M-16, as is expected, but I did learn that you can re-arrange the numbers of a sequence and get a different answer...how it works is still beyond me, but the fact is that it works...
S-26 was unusually boring today, since all we learned about was the Big Bang, and related theories. (Doppler, the invalidity of the Big Crunch, Super/String Theory, etc...) The only good thing about the class was that we were let out 15 minutes early due to a colossal oversight by the guest speaker of the class.

Having finally been released from the clutches of classes, I retreated back to the Student Center, and resumed my normal schedule, id est, playing DDR mindlessly. Other than completing one of Ducky's numerous challenges to me by AAAing DDR Oni without 3x Reverse, I didn't really get too much done. After saying my goodbyes to Fred, I left the place.

I sure hope X-Change 3 is going to get translated into English soon...for all its 513 CGs, X-Change 2 is starting to get just a little bit old.
...or maybe I could just grit my teeth and learn Japanese...

Well, it's been an interesting day...

I woke up late again, so I got to classes 20 minutes late....again. I didn't understand a word of C-02 (Object-Oriented Programming with Java), since I'm following the path of my more linear Java book as opposed to the path of my less linear (and slightly eccentric) Java teacher. I slept for most of class and woke up feeling refreshed. Of course, that feeling quickly dissipated when I realized that I had no money with which to buy lunch, nor was the lunch cart from which I usually buy my lunch even present. I settled in for an hour of flaunting my DDR skill (gogogo Trick Oni!). At Henry's urging, I decided to skip M-17 (Elementary Calculus through Problems and Examples) and visit the world of M-16 (Introduction to Rigorous Mathematics). There were only 4 people in this class, including me, which allowed me to better concentrate on the board, rather than on the people, which I had found myself doing quite often in M-17. Even though I understood very little of it, I managed to pick up more than I ever would be able to in M-17. S-26 (Intellectual Hodgepodge Redux) was the usual mixed bag, with bottle rockets, green fire, and burning steel wool.

After classes concluded, I settled in for another two and a half hours of DDR. I managed to scavenge the #2 spot on NNR for Trick Oni. It should be #1, but MaxThreeHundred still hasn't fixed his flawed score yet. I also managed to pick up a better score on Dancemania ~ONI~: 5777. I've owned the Dancemania for some time now, but I still can't beat Dave's bugged NAOKI Neo-STANDARD score without actually bugging it myself, which is something I have no plans for doing anytime soon.

Then I went home...ate a crapload of noodles, settled in for gaming...and writing a two-page long comment in smells.like.fangirl which took an hour to compose and longer to decide to post. I have too much free time...

Well, summer vacation is almost half over. I guess I should throw down for some summer reading...
